This thriller with a touch of comedy, starring Arón Piper and María Pedraza, was filmed in Madrid, Marbella, Brussels, Geneva and Hong Kong.

It was at the end of May that the final clapperboard sounded on the shooting of El Correo, the new feature film by Daniel Calparsoro (author of Hasta el cielo, the film and the series, which have thematic connections with this new work), scripted by Patxi Amezcua (Infiesto) and Alejo Flah (Taxi a Gibraltar). It is a thriller with elements of caustic comedy starring two idols of the youth thanks to the series Elite, Arón Piper (also seen in Fatum) and María Pedraza (also in Las niñas de cristal and La casa de papel), as well as a regular in the director’s films, Luis Tosar (the fruit of his last collaboration with Calparsoro before that, Todos los nombres de Dios, has yet to be released in theaters), flanked by Laura Sépul (seen in the Belgian series Enemigo público), Nourdin Batán (from the series La unidad), José Manuel Poga (starring in La fortaleza, which has just hit theaters), Luis Zahera (winner of a Goya this year for As bestas), among others.

In the words of the director, the film shows “the golden era that followed the arrival of the Euro in Spain and tells the adventures of a young go-getter and his rise, from the street to the upper echelons of corruption that surrounded the years of the real estate bubble”. A high-tension story about the excesses and delusions of grandeur of the time, a reflection of a unique era. A story in which the life of Iván, the hero, is intimately linked to the most emblematic moments of recent history. Filming took place over six weeks in Madrid, Marbella, Brussels, Geneva and Hong Kong.

The plot takes the viewer back to 2002: Spain leaves behind the peseta and adopts the new European currency, the Euro. It is a time full of opportunities for smart people like Iván, a young man from Vallecas who begins to find his Madrid neighborhood a little too small for him. From his job as a valet in a luxurious golf club in the capital, he will soon take his first big step forward: he becomes a courier for an international money laundering organization and starts transporting suitcases to Brussels and Geneva. But Iván can’t help but aim higher and higher. Money is flowing into the Costa del Sol through construction companies, corrupt politicians, bankers, sportsmen, the Chinese mafia… and he wants his share of the pie.

El Correo is produced by Vaca Films, Panache Productions and La Compagnie Cinématographique in association with Playtime Films, with the participation of Netflix, RTVE, Movistar Plus+, Canal+ and Ciné+, the support of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and the help of the Tax Shelter of the Federal Government of Belgium and the Tax Shelter of Movie Tax Invest. In Spain, the film will be released (exclusively in theaters) next year, distributed by Universal Pictures International Spain.

Grimmfest Easter launched in 2021 as an annual event, taking place over the Easter Weekend, and complimenting the long-established festival in October. The initial Easter festival was online only, due to the Covid-19 Lockdown in the UK. But 2022 sees it going live at regular host venue the Odeon Great Northern in Manchester UK, screening exclusive feature film premieres, together with Q&As and talks.

Grimmfest Easter will be a hybrid event with an online element, which will complement and sit alongside the live festival. Much of the content will cross both events but there will also be one or two online exclusives.

Grimmfest Easter offers all the cinematic thrills, spills, and chills, all the blood and black comedy that you have come to expect from Grimmfest, but in a leaner, meaner, more concentrated form. Something to satisfy even the most jaded of palates. Here are some highlights:

In the first of a brace of UK Premiere, white-knuckle thrillers from Spain, Maria Pedraza (Netflix’s Money Heist), stars as a troubled young woman whose search for online romance amid the Covid-19 Lockdown unleashes a particularly intrusive stalker, in the UK premiere of Alfonso Cortés-Cavanillas’ slippery psychodrama of identity theft and personality breakdown, Ego.
